A top leader of the alliance of 14 parties said that the senior leaders of the alliance do not see any future in electoral politics.
Sources said the alliance partners have never been so surrounded since they started contesting elections together in 2008. JP President Anwar Hussain Manju was elected MLA seven times and minister several times. He lost the election to his one-time personal assistant and Awami League independent candidate Mohiuddin Mohraj. Many people see the end of Manju’s political career through this defeat.
Samyabadi Dal General Secretary Dilip Barua sought nomination to contest the elections for the last time. Rashed Khan Menon was elected MP from Dhaka-8 constituency thrice but this time he was not nominated from this seat. Later he was successful in getting nomination from a seat in Barishal and won. It is uncertain whether the octogenarian politician will be able to contest the next elections or not. JSD president Hasanul Haq Inu was nominated but lost the election to an independent candidate from the Awami League.
Many leaders of the alliance said that internal discontent among the parties has intensified after the elections. Even some parties that have already faced splits several times may face another split.
JSD President Hasanul Haq Inu told Prothom Alo that the alliance of 14 parties still has relevance in politics.
He was hoping to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
