Three women rights activists got Nobel Peace Prize this year. They are Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Liberian Leymah Gbowee and Tawakul Karman of Yemen.
Their “non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work” were recognized by the Nobel prize committee.
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was elected as the first female head of the state. Gbowee is of the same country, she is a Liberian peace activist. Karman is a leader in pro-democracy movement in Yemen.
The prize money is $1.5m (£1m). The three will have to share the money that is $.5m for each.
Karman is the first Arab women to win a Nobel Peace Prize. She had to go to jail several times for campaigns for press freedom.
