37 including children rescued, 1 held

Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) has rescued 37 people, including women and children, while they were being trafficked to India through the Benapole border.

A human trafficker was also arrested.

They were rescued after a house belonging to one Rajjak of Sadipur was raided on Friday night, said Abdul Mannan, Nayek Subedar of 26 BGB battalions ICP camp in Benapole.

“The trafficker Shariatpur’s Jewel Hossain who was caught along with the others was illegally taking them to India’s Gujarat with false promises of jobs.”

There were 31 men, four women and two children in that group besides the trafficker. They hail from various districts including Narail, Chandpur, Jamalpur, Jessore, Bogura and Netrokona.

They were all kept in the custody of Benapole Port Police on Friday night.

The BGB official said the owner of the house and the other traffickers were able to flee after sensing BGB presence.

One of the victims Kesmot Ami of Narail told bdnews24.com that each of them gave Tk 40,000 to the traffickers for a job in India.

A case has been filed and they will be produced in court on Saturday, said SI Abdul Aziz of Benapole Port Station.
