Additional Chief Engineer of Dhaka Zone of Roads and Highways Department, Sabuj Uddin Khan, has become a topic of discussion due to allegations of collusion with contractors. Since 2009, his postings have been limited to Manikganj, Ghazipur and Dhaka offices. For eight years, he served as acting engineer and additional chief engineer in Dhaka circle, the most demanding sector for the department.
When contacted, Sabuj Uddin Khan denied the allegations and said that the contractors were dividing work areas among themselves, making it challenging for the authorities to effectively impose restrictions on them. Regarding Abaid Monsoor Construction’s dominance in Ghazipur and Manikganj, he said that they have identified some issues and are taking action to correct them.
Abu Hena Tarek Iqbal, Additional Chief Engineer, Cumilla Area, got posting in a fixed area for a long period. They were mostly transferred to offices that deal with large numbers of work contracts. Earlier he was the caretaker engineer of Chattogram circle.
Similar allegations were made against Sylhet Zone Additional Chief Engineer Fazle Rabbi.
However, he blamed the system prevalent for appointing certain contractors for work projects. He said that the participation of contractors in the price bidding is not at the expected level. Additionally, officials may also look into whether contractors have formed a syndicate and divided the areas among themselves.
Tarek Iqbal vehemently denied the allegations of engineers providing favors to favorite contractors and termed them baseless and said, we have been jealous of the allegations since birth (joining).
