Earthquakes are common in Papua New Guinea, but rarely cause widespread damage.
Outside major towns and cities, most areas are sparsely populated, and what buildings there are are made of wood.
But some earthquakes are more destructive.
In April, at least seven people were killed when a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the jungle-covered region of the Pacific island nation.
About 180 houses were destroyed in the Karawari area near the epicenter.
Last September, 10 people were killed when a 7.6-magnitude earthquake destroyed hundreds of homes, collapsed roads and knocked out power across rugged terrain in the country’s north.
