The government had already announced plans to recruit 5,000 more soldiers to fight the insurgency that has raged in the country since 2015.
Burkina’s transitional president, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has declared a goal of recapturing 40 percent of the country’s territory controlled by the jihadists.
According to non-governmental aid groups, more than 10,000 people have died in the violence, and two million have been displaced from their homes.
Anger within the military at the rising toll led to two coups in 2022, the most recent of which was in September, when Traore seized power.
He stands by a pledge made by the previous junta to elect a civilian government by 2024.
