Under the agreement, 120,000 tonnes of diesel is to be supplied annually, with a provision for an additional 60,000 tonnes, although this is not mandatory.
Since the outbreak of the war in the Middle East, diesel has been arriving from India at regular intervals, usually in consignments of 5,000 tonnes.
This is due to limited storage capacity in Bangladesh to receive pipeline supplies. Large quantities cannot be imported until the existing stock is cleared.
However, since fuel is now being unloaded rapidly from storage tanks, it has become possible to import 7,000 tonnes at a time.
The cost of transporting diesel via pipeline from India is about $5.5 per barrel (159 litres), which is often lower than transportation via sea.
