Eight people have been detained so far in connection with the murder of a local BNP leader in Dhaka’s Adabor area, allegedly over a dispute surrounding the celebration of a World Cup football match between Brazil and Japan on Wednesday.
The victim, Abul Bashar Badsha, 30, general secretary of the Nobodoy Housing unit of BNP, was hacked with knives and machetes during the attack. He later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, police said.
Police, the Detective Branch, and the Rapid Action Battalion have detained the suspects in separate drives since Thursday.
According to a Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) press release issued yesterday, the DB arrested four of the suspects: brothers Ripon, 27, and Nirab, 25; their father, Majnu Mia, 60; and Md Mizanur Rahman, 40.
They were arrested during a raid in the Sahebnagar area of Ishwarganj upazila in Mymensingh around 9:20pm on Thursday, according to the DB’s Tejgaon Division.
A knife believed to have been used in the killing was recovered during the operation.
Meanwhile, Adabor Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jahidul Islam said Rab detained two more suspects on Thursday night and handed them over to police. He did not disclose their identities.
The OC said two others — Shoaib, 30, and Arman, 19 — were also detained on Thursday in connection with the murder.
According to the OC, the violence erupted during an arbitration meeting convened to resolve a dispute over the viewing and celebration of a World Cup football match between Brazil and Japan.
Contacted last night, the victim’s brother, Md Kanchan, said, “We just returned from Mymensingh after burying my brother. We are now at the police station to file a case.”
