A local-led approach is needed to build climate-resilient townships

Bangladesh is good at planning but implementation is slow due to funding. We would like to call for cooperation from donors. “We have a big vision for this project and we envision success through collaboration,” he added.

Salimul Haque, in his concluding remarks, said that bureaucrats, elected representatives, banks, NGOs and the private sector and donors have to work together against the climate crisis.

He expressed his desire to see this collaboration reflected in the Mujib Samridhi Yojana, which envisions a step-by-step approach with learning from each step to ensure success.

A panel discussion was also organized in the programme. The panellists in the discussion were Sanjay Kumar Bhowmik, Additional Secretary, MoEFCC; MD Mokhlesur Rahman, Project Director, Coastal Cities Climate Resilience Project (CTCRP), Local Government Engineering Department (LGED); SA Abdullah Al Mamun, Urban Specialist, Asian Development Bank; MD Sarwar Bari, Director General, Monitoring, Inspection and Evaluation Wing, LGD; and Anna Ballance, Senior Climate and Environment Adviser at the British High Commission, Dhaka; Mohiuddin Ahmed, Mayor, Patuakhali Municipality; and Mohd. Anwar Hussain Hauldar, Mayor, Kuakata Municipality.
