The notification said that the appointed administrator will exercise the powers and perform the responsibilities of the Municipal Corporation Mayor in accordance with sub-section (3) of Section 25A of the Local Government (Municipal Corporation) (Amendment) Ordinance 2024.
Along with this, the government has appointed administrators in 11 municipal corporations across the country. However, in Chittagong City Corporation, BNP leader Shahadat Hussain is performing the duties of mayor as per the court order.
Local Government Ministry officials have mentioned that political administrators will serve until the municipal elections. After the elections they will hand over the responsibilities to the elected mayors.
Earlier, on February 23, six administrators were appointed for six municipal corporations including Dhaka North and South. Mohammad Abdus Salam for Dhaka South City Corporation, Mohammad Shafiqul Islam Khan for Dhaka North City Corporation, Nazrul Islam Manju for Khulna City Corporation, Abdul Qayoom Chowdhury for Sylhet City Corporation, Mohammad Sakhawat Hossain Khan for Narayanganj City Corporation and Mohammad Shaukat Hossain Sarkar for Ghazipur City Corporation were appointed administrators.
