The ruling Awami League has decided to hold councils of old district and upazila committees to bridge the rift that has arisen among the grassroots level of the party. The party also decided to announce full committees in those organizational units which had councils but had not formed full committees.
Awami League central leaders held a meeting with Rangpur and Chattogram division leaders and MPs on Saturday. The AL central body is scheduled to meet with Khulna division on April 4 and Mymensingh division on April 21. Meetings with other divisions will take place after Eid ul Fitr.
Sources said two issues – the internal conflict of the AL and the party's decision not to support any candidate in the upazila elections – were discussed the most during the two meetings. After the meetings, party seniors believe that the internal conflict will be reduced to some extent if councils are held and full committees are formed.
Meanwhile, the grassroots of the party wanted the central leaders to support a single candidate in the upazila elections where there will be no party symbol. But the AL central leadership believes that it would not be appropriate to support even a single candidate of the party. But if the local leadership of the party can field even one candidate then the party will not interfere.
