The United States emphasizes democracy, human rights, freedom of speech, and freedom of expression. At the same time, the country feels that the right of the people to do politics is important. The US has promised that questions will be raised and if needed, advice will be given if there is a crisis on the issues.
Donald Lu, the US assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, reiterated this message on Sunday in his meetings with several ministers and high-ranking government officials at the State Department and the Foreign Service Academy.
Several cabinet members also assured Donald Lu that the government intended to conduct the next (12th) parliamentary elections in a free, fair and credible manner. Bangladesh, like the US, expects all major parties to contest the elections.
