Iranian media quoted local sources and residents as saying that explosions were heard near the entrance to the strait, around nearby Bandar Abbas and later in Jask County.

Iranian media quoted Khatam al-Anbiya, the country’s top commander of the Joint Military Command, as saying that some US bases in the region were targeted in response to the attacks.

According to media, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they attacked the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain with drones and threatened “a more serious response” if hostilities continued.

Bahrain’s Interior Ministry said a warning siren had been sounded and the public was urged to move to safety. A media adviser to Bahrain’s king said in a post on Twitter shortly afterwards that air defenses had repelled the Iranian attacks.

The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Reuters could not immediately verify the battlefield reports.

Oil prices rose nearly 1 percent in early Asian trade on Wednesday after an increase in hostilities.
