Amnesty International said in a statement on Monday that the sentencing of 83-year-old Nobel laureate Mohammed Yunus and his colleagues represents an abuse of labor laws and an abuse of the justice system to settle political vendettas.

“Amnesty International believes that the initiation of criminal proceedings against Mohammed Yunus and his associates for issues related to the civil and administrative sector is a gross abuse of labor laws and the justice system and a form of political reprisal for their work and dissent. Is,” reads. A statement has been issued by the organization on its X handle.

A labor court in Dhaka convicted 83-year-old Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus and his three associates under the Bangladesh Labor Act 2006 and sentenced them to six months’ imprisonment.
