Argentina players waved a political banner declaring “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falklands are Argentina”) after their 2-1 World Cup semi-final win over England on Wednesday, in an apparent breach of FIFA rules.
FIFA’s Stadium Code of Conduct prohibits “banners, flags, flyers, apparel and other items that are political, offensive and/or discriminatory in nature” inside stadiums.
World soccer’s ruling body did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The question of sovereignty over the islands in the South Atlantic, known to the British as the Falklands and to Argentina as the Malvinas, has long been a sour point in relations between the countries.
