“Deteriorating conditions in migrant facilities at the border mean that asylum seekers are at unnecessary risk,” said the humanitarian organization International Rescue Committee.

It added, “Robust systems along Mexico’s migration corridors are critical to providing asylum seekers with the protections they need to survive.”

The US ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, said the tragedy “reminds governments in the region of the importance of fixing a broken migration system and of the risks of irregular migration.”

The administration of President Joe Biden is hoping to stem the record tide of migrants and asylum seekers making the often perilous journeys to the United States by human traffickers.

About 200,000 people try to cross the border from Mexico into the United States each month, most of them fleeing poverty and violence in Central and South America.

According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 7,600 migrants have died or disappeared in the US since 2014.

About 4,400 of them were killed or went missing en route across the US-Mexican border, according to the UN agency.
