At least 42 people have died after a dam broke near a town in Kenya's Rift Valley, a local governor told AFP on Monday, as heavy rains and flooding lashed the country.
A dam broke near Mai Mahiu in Nakuru County, washing away homes and cutting off roads, with rescue teams digging through debris to find survivors.
Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika said, “Forty-two are dead, that's a conservative estimate. There are more people still in the mud, we are working on recovering them.”
The dam collapse on Monday took the total death toll from the March-May wet season to 120, as the El Nino weather pattern brought more rainfall than usual in East Africa.
