At least 42 people have died after a dam broke near a town in Kenya's Rift Valley, a local governor told AFP on Monday, as heavy rains and flooding lashed the country.

A dam broke near Mai Mahiu in Nakuru County, washing away homes and cutting off roads, with rescue teams digging through debris to find survivors.

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika said, “Forty-two are dead, that's a conservative estimate. There are more people still in the mud, we are working on recovering them.”

The dam collapse on Monday took the total death toll from the March-May wet season to 120, as the El Nino weather pattern brought more rainfall than usual in East Africa.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Red Cross said on Monday it had recovered two bodies, as well as 23 others, after a boat carrying “a large number of people” capsized over the weekend in flood-ravaged Tana River county in eastern Kenya. Has been saved.
