Diego Maradona’s former teammates gathered to pay tribute to the icon on the second anniversary of his death at the World Cup in Qatar on Friday, recalling brighter days when Argentina shook off their troubles in Saudi Arabia.

Considered one of the greatest football players in history, Maradona passed away at the age of 60 on November 25, 2020, after battling drug and alcohol abuse.

Despite his passing, Maradona remains very much in the minds of Argentine fans. Scores still wear his jersey, sing about his “Hand of God” goal against England in the quarter-finals of the 1986 World Cup and fiercely debate whether the comparison to Lionel Messi is fair.

At the CONMEBOL Tree of Dreams in central Doha, an arena celebrating South American football, FIFA President Gianni Infantino greeted former teammates of Maradona, who described his greatness on and off the pitch.
