“It’s really a sign of the man, he himself said ‘not quite feeling right’ so he took himself out of selection. We talk a lot about how (as a team) we need to have a squad It takes mindset and I think this is another great example.
“We didn’t really get to a decision point, we gave it enough time and it played out. There would have been a part of everybody that felt a little bit sad when Scott missed.”
Veteran batsman David Warner was also included in the squad for the second Test. He will become the 14th Australian to play 100 matches in the format.
Australia won the two days at the Gabba to take a 1–0 lead in the second Test. The final match will be played in Sydney from January 4.
