Jahangir Alam, the then GCC mayor and Ghazipur City Awami League general secretary, was expelled from the party on 19 November 2021. It was secretly believed that Jahangir was expelled as a video of him making derogatory remarks about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Photos of many big leaders of Ghazipur became viral on social media Facebook. Later, he was also temporarily suspended from the post of GCC mayor.
In the context of these developments, through a council on 19 November 2022, Mohd Azmat Ullah Khan was elected as the president of the Ghazipur city Awami League and Ataullah Mandal as the general secretary.
With this, any possibility of Jahangir’s return to the party became almost impossible.
Later, on 21 January, Jehangir Alam received a letter of apology from the Central Committee of the Awami League. Since then he was trying to regain the mayor’s post. However, the government did not restore his mayoral post.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission declared the election schedule. After failing to secure nomination from the party, he and his mother Zaida Khatoon collected nomination papers as independent candidates. Although her candidacy was eventually cancelled, her mother participated in the election as an independent candidate.
