In 1979, Bangladesh, a country that had gained independence just eight years earlier, sent a cricket team to England to participate in the ICC Trophy for the first time.
A top two finish in the tournament would have sealed Bangladesh’s place in the World Cup. However, for Bangladesh, it was a huge dream to fulfill at that time.
The realistic target for the team was to win a few matches and try to qualify for the knockout stage of the 15-team tournament.
There was another country in that tournament which was in a similar situation. They were also in England for their first appearance in the ICC Trophy. That team was, of course, Argentina.
Bangladesh and Argentina did not clash in that tournament. Argentina was in Group A and Bangladesh in Group B and as expected both teams failed to progress past the first round.
The two teams finally met on a cricket ground in the 1986 edition of the tournament.
