Bangladesh Bank (BB) has imposed a fine of Tk 100,000 each on treasury heads of 10 banks for selling dollars at higher prices.
The Central Bank has sent a letter to the banks in this regard.
The 10 banks are: Mercantile Bank, Premier Bank, BRAC Bank, Modhumoti Bank, Midland Bank, Exim Bank, Social Islami Bank, Al-Arafa Islami Bank, Shahjalal Islami Bank and Trust Bank.
As part of the process, on September 18, the central bank issued a show cause letter to the concerned banks. Earlier, the first letter regarding the allegation was sent on September 3.
In letters sent to these banks, Bibi said that the heads of the Treasury Department have no way to escape responsibility.
Sources said that since the explanations given by the banks were not satisfactory, the central bank decided to impose penalty on the treasury heads of 10 banks.
The treasury department of banks oversees the demand and supply of dollars and taka in the bank. In some banks, officers at the level of Deputy Managing Director head the treasury department.
Top officials of several concerned banks said allegations have been made against most of the treasury chiefs that their banks sold dollars to importers at a price higher than that set by the authorities.
