Bangladesh crackdown: HRW says thousands arrested in violent crackdown ahead of general elections

Bangladesh has launched a widespread and violent crackdown on opposition parties to “eliminate competition” ahead of general elections, including arresting nearly 10,000 activists, Human Rights Watch said on Monday.

Along with thousands of people arrested, several people from the dominant Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have also been charged.

HRW said, according to the BNP, about half of its five million members “face politically motivated prosecution”.

“The arrests are leaving no one behind, from senior levels to the grassroots,” one activist told HRW.

The rights group said prisons are now at more than double their capacity.
