Meanwhile, oil is spilling from the ship into the Meghna. People living on the banks of the river in the area are now unable to use the water for bathing and other purposes.
“The accident involving Sagar Nandini-2 violated the Maritime Act. The actual crew of the ship was not on board. A case will be registered against Sagar Nandini-2 for violation of the Marine Act.
BIWTA director, MD Shahjahan alleged that the operator of the ship was also responsible for the accident as the original crew was not on board.
He said that the exact cause of the incident would be known after the inquiry committees submitted their reports.
