People in Bangladesh earn more on average than people in India and Pakistan. This is the mathematics of earning within the country. Two decades ago, people in both countries earned much more than people in Bangladesh.
After independence, Bangladesh was termed as ‘basket case’. But within 50 years of independence, Bangladesh overtook South Asia’s two largest powers in terms of per capita GDP. Bangladesh has been ahead of India and Pakistan in many economic and social indicators including average life expectancy, literacy rate, women empowerment etc. for the last two decades.
According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Bangladesh has been ahead of India in terms of per capita GDP for four consecutive years. The country’s per capita GDP has been higher than Pakistan for the last eight years. Bangladesh’s per capita GDP is US$2,621 while India’s is US$2,612 and Pakistan’s is US$1,471.
