In its assessment report on the Generalized Preferences Plan (GSP) covering the period 2020-2022, the EU said in November that Bangladesh had made some progress on labor rights, but that authorities still needed to implement their commitments on these rights. Speed should be increased.
The commerce ministry said a new minimum wage in the readymade garment sector has been announced, which will be effective from January, and the government is working out what more can be done for worker welfare.
Tapan Kanti Das further said that the EU and the US had certain pre-conditions and the Bangladesh Economic Zone Act and the Labor Act have largely fulfilled the US pre-conditions. He said that the Labor Act has been amended three times in the last few years.
