Bangladesh authorities have taken steps to ensure that women can comfortably use the country’s first metro rail in Dhaka.
One compartment in each train is reserved for women, but they can travel in other compartments as well.
MAN Siddique, managing director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited, highlighted various aspects of the electric train on 12 December at an event organized by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, which funded a major portion of the project.
Siddiqui said, “The metro rail will have six coaches. One coach will be reserved only for women. However, women can travel in other coaches if they want.”
Metro Rail will start on 28 December. However, in the first phase the train will cover a distance of only 11.73 km from Uttara to Agargaon. It will take 20 minutes to complete the journey. After the full running of the train, the time will be 16-17 minutes.
