Palestine experienced the fourth-largest drop in terms of peace in the latest Peace Index, falling nine places to 145th. Its overall score fell by 7.28 percent, with declines in all three areas over the past year.
Although this was the largest year-on-year decline in peacefulness in Palestine, the security environment had been deteriorating further over the past three years, and the country had recorded the largest deterioration in peacefulness of any country over the past decade.
The main reason for the decline in Palestinian peace was the conflict in Gaza, which has caused a decline of about 24 percent in the ongoing conflict zone. More than 17,000 Palestinians are estimated to have been killed in the Gaza conflict in 2023, with the latest figures indicating that the number had risen to more than 33,000 by April 2024, while some estimates suggest the number could be as high as 100,000.
