Bangladesh to import 4.5 million tonnes of rice and wheat from India: Government’s quota system initiative

It is noteworthy that quota has already been sought from India for the import of six essential commodities including rice and wheat in December 2022. However, recent emphasis on this matter suggests a renewed focus. Sources reveal that after the January 7 elections, discussions were held at the highest level of both the countries.

Briefing Prothom Alo on Tuesday, Commerce Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh said, “Last year, we had initiated discussions regarding import of certain products including rice and wheat from India through quota. A draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on this matter has been sent to India. Discussions have resumed after the recent elections and I am optimistic about rapid progress between the two countries.

This fresh discussion on imports of rice and wheat comes at a crucial time when prices of these essential grains are rising in the country. At the beginning of the year, the wholesale price of rice has seen an increase of 4-5 taka per kg. Along with this, an increase of 5 taka per kg has also been seen in the price of packaged flour.

According to government agency Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), the price of coarse rice in the Dhaka market is currently ranging from Rs 50 to Rs 52 per kg, showing an increase of Rs 2 per kg. Similarly, the price of medium rice has seen an increase of Rs 1 to Rs 2 per kg, now ranging from Rs 52 to Rs 56, and fine rice has seen an increase of Rs 2, now ranging from Rs 62 to Rs 75. The price per kilogram has reached the limit. ,
