Some of them are daily wage labourers, some do menial jobs in tea gardens, some are from remote hilly areas, some are physically challenged and some continue their studies defying all odds. They have one thing in common – they do not have safe homes to live in.
Another common thread among the bands is that they dream of representing Bangladesh for the first time in the next Homeless World Cup to be held in California, USA from July 6-15.
Their World Cup mission formally began on Friday morning through an exhibition match at the Dhaka University Central Arena. The Bangladesh Homeless World Cup team defeated the DU students team in a friendly match in a tie-breaker after the match ended in a 2-2 stalemate.
Homeless World Cup team MD Nayan Mia scored the first goal in the first half with a header. DU took a 2-1 lead with two goals from Jilanur Rashid and Muhibullah Rafi. Prenchong Mro scored a brilliant equalizer for his team in the last minute.
