Biden’s letter: feelings of ease and unease

There are some repetitions in President Biden’s letter. Besides, it also mentions the establishment of an independent and open Indo-Pacific region. “The United States is committed to supporting Bangladesh’s ambitious economic goals and partnering with Bangladesh on our shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Biden wrote.

President Biden also wrote, “As we begin the next chapter of the US-Bangladesh partnership, I am committed to my administration’s commitment to continuing to work together on regional and global security, economic growth, climate change and energy, global “Want to express my wish.” Health, humanitarian aid, especially for Rohingya refugees, and much more.”

Both letters express the desire to expand economic relations i.e. investment and trade. It also mentions humanitarian aid including the Rohingya refugee issue. This time additional factors include global security and climate change. While President Trump talked about Bangladesh’s reputation being tarnished by election irregularities and attacks on the opposition, President Biden completely sidelined democracy, human rights and election issues. This can be a matter of relief for the Bangladesh government.

However, there is also scope to interpret this letter as a reflection of Bangladesh not being considered a democracy in light of the Biden administration upholding democracy and human rights as the mainstay of its foreign policy for the past three years.

Since the Biden administration has failed to bring Bangladesh back on the path to democracy, perhaps it found it unnecessary to raise the issue. This is certainly a matter of disappointment for those who aspired to the revival of multi-party democracy. But it could also be a premonition sign for Bangladesh.
