While it was not clear whether Bhutto would have any bilateral meetings with Indian officials on the sidelines of the SCO meeting, analysts said the visit was significant.

Islamabad-based analyst Qamar Cheema said, “Engaging economically with India requires extensive confidence-building measures, but this is an important milestone in the history of Pakistan-India relations.”

Relations between the nuclear-armed nations have been among the best since they were formed out of the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947.

Their conflict over Kashmir has resulted in three full-fledged wars and several minor skirmishes.
