Involvement of competent persons is necessary
After the landslide victory, Tariq Rehman promised to establish the rule of law in a press conference, saying that the law should apply equally to all citizens – whether they are from the ruling party, the opposition, or those with different views.
Asked what would be the main challenges after forming the government, he said the economy should be fixed, law and order should be controlled and governance should be ensured as the previous government had politicized almost all the institutions.
Political analysts believe that to accomplish these tasks, it is necessary to include honest, efficient, hardworking and visionary individuals in the cabinet. He noted that the BNP manifesto promised to establish a “Truth and Healing Commission” to ensure victim-centred and rehabilitative justice, which would require competent individuals in the government to implement.
During the campaign, the BNP repeatedly spoke out against corruption and gave top priority to anti-corruption measures in its manifesto. Public confidence in these commitments is evident from the election results. Therefore, it is expected that the party will promote honest and capable persons in the government and administration.
Political observers say that the extent to which Tariq Rehman can implement the promises of his governance will largely be indicated by the composition of the cabinet.
Former caretaker government adviser Hussein Zillur Rahman wrote in Prothom Alo yesterday that it was important for the new government to send economic “signals” early. The practical ability of those running the cabinet and the state will also serve as an important signal.
Many other prominent citizens have also similarly stressed the need to include capable individuals in the new Cabinet in interviews and comments.
