The police have given the opposition BNP the go-ahead to stage a sit-in outside its Naya Paltan headquarters on January 11.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Khandekar Ghulam Farooq said on Tuesday that he had given permission on the condition that the protest program would not disrupt traffic on the road.

Earlier, the police had refused the BNP’s request to hold a rally at the same venue on 10 December as part of the party’s anti-government agitation.

This caused tension. One person was killed in violent clashes between police and BNP workers in Naya Paltan before the rally. Hundreds of BNP leaders and workers were arrested, including general secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Later, the party held a rally in Golbagh and announced a series of programs for demands, including an election-time caretaker government following the resignation of the Awami League administration.
