A boat carrying 185 Rohingya refugees landed off the coast of Indonesia’s Aceh province on Sunday, a local disaster agency official said, hundreds fleeing desperate conditions in refugee camps in Bangladesh late last year.
Ridwan Jamil, head of the Aceh Besar disaster agency, said more than half of those who arrived as of 2:30 p.m. Sunday were women and children.
Photos shared by Ridwan showed refugees sitting in groups and lying on the sand.
Hundreds of Rohingya have arrived in Aceh in the past few months, including a boat carrying 174 people in late December.
The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said 2022 could be one of the deadliest years at sea in nearly a decade for the Rohingya, who have long been persecuted in Buddhist-majority Myanmar.
