It was a wedding ceremony in Bilhamla village of northern district Bogra. Bride was only a girl of class six and Bridegroom was HSC second year student.
According to the law, child marriage is illegal in Bangladesh and minimum age for bride is 18 and for bridegroom it is 21. The law was enacted to ensure female education and maternal health.
But many parents in the rural areas are reluctant to follow the law.
On receiving the news local police rushed to the wedding ceremony to prevent the child marriage. Young bridegroom and his companions ran away on watching police. Father of the bride admitted that he was wrong and said he will not attempt to marry up his daughter again before 18. Officer in charge of local police station says awareness buildup is necessary to prevent child marriage.
