BSMMU doc, husband killed in road accident

A female doctor and her engineer husband were killed and three others injured in a traffic accident in Gazipur on Wednesday night.

Nahid Ruksana Lopa, 32, a urology department physician at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital and her husband Monwar Hossain Biplob, 38, an IT expert at Grameenphone, succumbed to their injuries at Gazipur sadar hospital after their car collided head-on with a truck.

Three others, including Lopa’s four-year-old son Nuhad, driver Murad, 40, and domestic help Kakon, 12 were also injured in the accident at Tek Nagarpara on the Dhaka-Mymensing highway at about 11:00pm Wednesday.

Doctors at the sadar hospital referred Murad to the National Institute of Traumatology, Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Hospital in Dhaka.

Gazipur police said relatives took the bodies at about 3:00am and kept them at the BSMMU mortuary. They will be buried after Lopa’s mother returns from hajj, sources said.

A namaz-e-janaza was held on the BSMMU premises after zohr prayers before the bodies were kept in the mortuary.

Relatives said Lopa’s family members were on their way to the capital from

their village home in Sherpur.

Lopa and Biplob used to reside at Green Road in the capital.
