The Public Works Ministry said the BSMMU VC had initially applied for residence in the first phase in January last year. Then, on September 5, he submitted another application requesting government accommodation, bringing the matter to light once again.
It was revealed that, on the basis of the first letter, Professor Sharfuddin was allotted a government accommodation in Gulshan. However, the ministry is now insisting that handing over the residence to the Vice Chancellor was a mistake.
This is because there is no provision for allotting government accommodation to individuals working in autonomous or specialized institutions; Housing facilities are reserved only for government officials and employees.
Officials of the housing department of the ministry further clarified that they arrange accommodation only for government officials and employees. A ministry official said that somehow a house was allotted in the name of the BSMMU Vice Chancellor, but the allotment of that house was canceled last year.
