Dhaka WASA mostly depends on underground water. But excessive dependence on underground water is decreasing the water level. WASA is trying to reduce dependence on underground water. So they are eying on surface water.
Technically it’s a cheaper solution. But growing population and unplanned urbanization has polluted Buriganga and Shitalakkha rivers. So now WASA is planning to bring water from Meghna River for treatment. Bringing water from such a distance is expensive and the consumers have to pay for that.
At an annual festival of of Chattagram Samity-Dhaka, LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam said our rivers are becoming more and more polluted. We need to be aware of that. River water is becoming untreatable. He also talked on water supply condition at Chittagong, where water is being brought from Halda and Rangunia River instead of Karnaphuli River. Because, its water has become salty.
