Member of Parliament AK Azad has commented that Bangladesh Bank does not have enough power to regulate the banking sector.
He said that a business group had borrowed Tk 12 billion from a bank but Bangladesh Bank was not aware of it.
AK Azad, former president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI), the apex body of businessmen in the country, said banks have set loan limits for single customers.
AK Azad said these things in his speech as a special guest in the discussion titled 'Pre-Budget Discussion: Expectations of the Private Sector' at Hotel Intercontinental in the capital on Sunday.
The meeting was jointly organized by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), Bengali daily Samakal and Channel 24, a private television channel.
He said that although the central bank later investigated and became aware of the incident, no action was taken against anyone.
AK Azad commented, this is happening due to the weakness of Bangladesh Bank.
