Saturday’s violence began amid Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations in Monterey Park, a center of the Asian-American community in Southern California, which initially sparked concerns that the attack could be racially motivated. The program for the second day was cancelled.

Fourteen people were killed in 2015 in San Bernardino, east of LA County, by a married couple who authorities said were extremists inspired by foreign terrorist groups. They were killed in an encounter with the police hours later.
