Canada deploys military aircraft to Haiti to flush out gangs

Canadian patrol aircraft will provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities to enhance peacekeeping and peacekeeping efforts and will remain in the area for “several days”, the Canadian government said.

In October, the United Nations suggested sending a “Rapid Action Force” to Haiti to combat rising violence from armed gangs, whose fighting has killed hundreds and displaced thousands.

But many have expressed skepticism, citing abuse from previous missions and questioning the force supporting Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s administration, which has been without democratically elected representatives since early January.

Most countries have been wary of sending troops, although nearby Jamaica has said it would be willing to participate and El Salvador has offered “technical assistance”.

Nearly seven in 10 people in Haiti propose creating an international force to help the national police fight violence from armed gangs, according to a poll conducted in January.
