Canada links murder of exiled Sikhs to India, expels RAW chief

Jolie said the expelled Indian heads India’s foreign intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) in Canada.

Nijjar, declared a wanted terrorist by India, was shot dead on June 18 in Surrey, a Vancouver suburb that is home to a prominent Sikh community.

Canada has the largest population of Sikhs outside Punjab, India.

Nijjar advocated the creation of an independent Sikh state consisting of parts of northern India and perhaps part of Pakistan.

New Delhi had accused Nijjar of carrying out terrorist attacks in India, although he denied the charge.

India’s foreign ministry on Tuesday rejected Canada’s claims of involvement in his death.

“Allegations of Indian government involvement in any acts of violence in Canada are absurd and motivated,” the ministry said in a statement. “We are a democratic polity with a strong commitment to the rule of law,” he said.

It said Trudeau – who visited New Delhi this month for the G20 summit – has already made similar allegations against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and they have been “completely rejected” .
