Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader hoped the event would be a memorable one, with local leaders campaigning for it last week.
To mark the occasion, the streets and lanes of the port city are decorated with banners and pylons.
Meanwhile, activists from across the district gathered in the city wearing T-shirts with pictures of their local MPs, accompanied by band marches.
Hasina had earlier attended an Awami League rally in Patia Upazila in March 2018. However, his last appearance at a public event in the port city came in March 2012.
