Muizzu this week embarked on his first state visit to China – the Maldives’ biggest external creditor – and on Thursday, the two sides issued a joint communiqué detailing the “broad consensus” reached by their two leaders.
The statement published on state broadcaster CCTV said China vowed to “continue to provide assistance within its capacity to the Maldivian side in priority areas.”
It further said, “building infrastructure, medical care and health care, improving people’s livelihood, new energy sources, agriculture and marine environment protection”.
In return, Muizzu thanked China for its “selfless assistance” in providing development funds to the Maldives.
The release came after a meeting with President Xi Jinping on Wednesday, in which Beijing announced “stepping forward bilateral ties.”
“Under the new circumstances, China-Maldives relations have a historic opportunity to build on past achievements and move forward,” Xi told Muizzu, according to China’s state news agency Xinhua.
