Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen on Sunday said Dhaka and Beijing are engaged in long-running discussions on the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project, expressing hope that work on the long-awaited initiative will begin soon.
He made this comment while talking to reporters after meeting Foreign Minister Khalilur Rehman.
The Chinese Ambassador described the recent elections as smooth and orderly and called it a victory for democracy.
He said that high level visits between the two countries will continue.
On February 17, 2026, Chinese Premier Li Qiang on the State Council sent a congratulatory message to Tariq Rahman on his inauguration as Bangladeshi Prime Minister.
Li Qiang wrote in the message that China and Bangladesh are long-standing friendly neighbors and comprehensive strategic cooperative partners.
Friendly relations between the two countries are very old.
Li said, over the past 51 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China and Bangladesh have always respected each other and treated each other as equals, pursuing mutually beneficial cooperation and win-win results, setting a good example of exchanges between the countries.
The Chinese government supports the new Bangladeshi government in smooth governance.
Li said he is ready to work with Prime Minister Tariq Rahman to carry forward the long-standing friendship, enhance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and exchanges in all areas, and raise the China-Bangladesh comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership to a new level, so as to bring greater benefits to both peoples.
