Other directors nominated by the DGA for this year’s top award were Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon), Greta Gerwig (Barbie), Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things) and Alexander Payne (The Holdovers).

Nolan will again go head-to-head with Scorsese and Lanthimos at the Oscars, but especially not with Gerwig, whose role as director of the blockbuster feminist satire ‘Barbie’ led to outrage over being apparently snubbed by the Academy.

Gerwig did not address the Oscar controversy on Saturday, only saying that the recognition “in the company of my heroes” at the DGA ceremony meant “more than I could ever say.”

Comment was left to Jonah Hill, who walked on stage and began honestly: “Before we begin, it would be irresponsible not to acknowledge recent tragedies.

“Of course, I’m referring to the fact that ‘Barbie’ only received eight Academy Award nominations.”

The DGA award for Best Film by a First-Time Filmmaker went to another Oscar nominee – Celine Song’s ‘Past Lives’.
