When asked about the incident, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sajjat Ali told Prothom Alo that the protesters attempted to break the police barricades and encircle Jamuna. Some protesters tried to damage the water cannon. In such a situation, the police was forced to act in public interest.
After the clash, at around 4.30 pm, Naseeruddin Patwari, candidate of the electoral alliance of Dhaka-8 and 11 parties, reached in front of the Intercontinental Hotel. He along with others started a protest march which moved from the Intercontinental Hotel area to Shahbagh intersection.
