A clash broke out between casteist student group and activists of Islamic Chhatra Shibir at Government City College, Chattogram. After the initial confrontation this morning (Tuesday), there was another clash between the two sides in the afternoon. Bricks and stones were thrown during the incident. In this situation, classes and scheduled college examinations were suspended. However, degree second year and master’s examinations were conducted under the National University.
According to college sources, there was a graffiti on the wall of the college building that read: “Campus free of student politics and student leagues.” On Monday night, a group of activists led by Abdullah Al Mamun, joint coordinator of the college wing of the student body, went there and erased the word “student” from the graffiti. He wrote “Gupto” on top instead. Gupto roughly translates as secret or hidden. Some student organizations, including Chhatra Dal, have been accusing Shibir of being involved in secret politics on various campuses. The dispute over this issue led to the first round of clashes between workers from both sides this morning.
