A White House lawyer said Monday that classified documents from Joe Biden’s vice presidency were discovered in November by the US president’s personal lawyers at a Washington think tank.
CBS News previously reported that about 10 documents were found in Biden’s office at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement, adding that US Attorney General Merrick Garland had asked the US attorney in Chicago to review those classified documents. The classified material was identified by Biden’s personal attorneys on Nov. 2, days before the midterm elections, Richard Sauber, special counsel to the president, said in a statement on Monday.
The Penn Biden Center is named after Biden, who used the office space periodically from mid-2017 until the start of his 2020 presidential campaign. Sabir said the White House Counsel’s Office notified the National Archives the day of the discovery of those documents, with the National Archives taking possession of the material the next morning.
Sauber also stated that the documents had not been the subject of any previous request or inquiry by the National Archives.
The documents were discovered when Biden’s personal attorney was “packing up files stored in a locked closet in preparation for vacating office space at the Penn Biden Center in Washington, DC,” Sauber said. He said the White House is cooperating with the Justice Department and the National Archives.
